Root Canals (a type of Endodontic treatment) are sometimes necessary when the tissue inside the tooth’s root canal becomes inflamed or infected. This may be caused by tooth decay, trauma to the tooth or a crack in the tooth. Root Canals are performed to stop pain and prevent future pain.
How to I know if I need a root canal?
Some of the indicator that you might need a root canal include:
• Pain when eating or chewing • Tenderness to the touch• Swelling of nearby tissue and possibly the lymph nodes• Increased sensitivity to heat or cold• Discoloration of the tooth
Sometimes there are no symptoms and the infection or inflammation is found during a routine dental check-up.
Can all teeth be saved with root canals?
In most cases the tooth can be saved, but sometimes the damage is too extensive. Dr. McCormick’s years of experience allow him to identify those patients who are good candidates for root canals and those who would benefit from seeing a specialist.
What if my tooth is not a candidate for a root canal?
If all options are exhausted and a tooth cannot be saved, the tooth may need to be extracted. In cases where extraction is required, the doctor will discuss your options with you. You may be a candidate for a dental implant to restore missing function caused by the loss of that tooth.
