Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a “cap” placed on a tooth damaged by decay or injury.   They can be used to repair the tooth and make it stronger.

Dental Crowns are used for a variety of reasons including:

  • to repair a tooth that is severely damaged and cannot be filled
  • to improve the appearance of damaged teeth
  • to hold a dental bridge in place
  • to restore a broken or worn down tooth

Each situation is unique and Dr. McCormick will help you decide if a Dental Crown is the best solution for your dental needs.

Crowns can be created from a variety of materials including:

  • Metals including gold alloy, other alloys (palladium) or a base-metal alloy (nickel or chromium)
  • Zirconia
  • Porcelain fused to metal (PFM)
  • Porcelain fused to zirconia

Each material offers different benefits.  The all-metal or porcelain fused to metal crowns are stronger and are better choices for back teeth than ceramic crowns. Porcelain fused to metal crowns and all-ceramic crowns are the same color as your natural teeth and look very natural. Dr. McCormick will discuss your options with you and determine which material would best fit your needs.

To begin the process of creating a crown, we take a mold of the tooth in need of the crown. The mold is then sent to an area dental lab we have been partnering with for many years. They create your crown from molds taken in our Santa Rosa office.  A few weeks later, the crown is ready for placement.

Dental crowns can last for many years. Maintaining good oral hygiene is important to help your dental crown last as long as possible. Our staff will instruct you on the best way to care for your crown.
